I actually always wanted to serve in the Military, but for my family, definitely, and for myself, education was a priority. And that allowed me to both attend college and serve in a branch of Service in the Military, and serve the country. So, in ROTC, we have, kind of, three different types of trainings. One is physical training, of course.
Then part of our training is devoted to military science classes. Hurricane Irene was actually my first activation. So that, I mean, was basically why I joined the Army National Guard, not only because I wanted to serve my country, but also the state. And so being able to be activated and participate in a mission that was, you know, helping my neighbors, and my fellow classmates in New York City, was just an amazing and grateful experience.
Army ROTC is one of the most demanding and successful leadership programs in the country. The training a student receives in Army ROTC provides leadership development, military skills and career training. Training is part of an elective curriculum students complete along with required college courses.
They also have the opportunity to attend Summer Cruise Training, working alongside Navy officers. Participants attending college on a Navy ROTC scholarship are required to serve on active duty between four and five years after graduation, depending on which of the following options they choose : Navy option five years , Marine Corps option four years and Navy Nurse Corps Option four years. Cadets accept a commission as second lieutenants in the Air Force, and service commitments range between four years and 10 years pilots. Soldiers without college credit who require four years to complete their degree are considered for four-year scholarships. Soldiers with two years of college remaining to complete their degree are considered for two-year scholarships, and those with three years of college remaining are considered for three-year scholarships.
Three- and four-year scholarships are available. Four-year scholarships are activated in the fall of freshman year, while three-year scholarships activate in the fall of sophomore year.
Recipients of three-year scholarships are required to complete AFROTC training during their freshman year in order to gain eligibility to activate their scholarships at the start of their sophomore year.
Recipients separate from active duty and become full-time college students. Upon completion of requirements, recipients are commissioned as second lieutenants and returned to active duty for a period of at least four years. The ROTC program is continuously seeking ways to improve their education even further. The Lead Lab is a leadership laboratory planned and run by junior and senior cadets at UT. The entire cadet corps in uniform attend the course to learn from their peers.
Cadets learn the basics of Air Force drill and ceremony, customs, and hands-on skills necessary for leaders in the field. At the University of Tennessee, the Army ROTC program was the first out of all the state universities nationwide whose hands-on experiences give graduates an edge in meeting their professional goals. The robust curriculum includes classes in leadership, fitness, and military history. These opportunities include law enforcement, engineering, law, and medicine.
The curriculum develops cadets mentally, morally, and physically while teaching them the highest ideals of duty. Graduates from the program serve in highly regarded teams such as the Marine Corps, naval aviation, submarines upon commission from the Naval ROTC program. In addition, they have the opportunity to participate in many real-world activities such as base visits, paintball, expeditionary days, and guess lectures from past and present leaders. Naval ROTC Midshipmen have access to facilities that support their moral, mental, and physical development. In addition, students are offered specialized advising sessions unmatched by any other department in the university.
Cadets are matched with an active-duty commissioned Naval Officer whose mission is to mold aspiring Naval Officers. They provide academic advice, tutoring, and assistance in daily ROTC life to see their cadets succeed.
